It's a story that could easily be updated and remade for new American audiences, although the argument could be made that Scent of a Woman was already an unofficial adaptation of sorts so never mind. Bullying is a real issue, and private schools have long proven to be a hotbed for the barbarity of youth. Thomas Hughes' source novel was first published in 1857 and has been adapted for the screen several times - twice for television and three times for the movies - and its core themes and plot remain every bit as relevant today. It's an extremely well-crafted and smart morality tale. The ruffians aren't fooling around as they abuse, berate, and even burn young Tom, but his actions spark a rebellion resulting in a terrific montage of kids turning the tables on the bullies with orchestrated pranks and attacks. The new headmaster wants to squash it out of his school, but while most kids just go along with it (whether it's happening to them or others) it takes Tom stepping up to bring it all down. Friendship, honor, and respect are the threads running through this classic tale, but all of them are wrapped around a main narrative involving bullying.

The organisers say that the current French government is more talk than action, and this year’s official chant is: Plus de droits, moins de bla-bla, trop de promesses, on régresse ! (More rights, less talk, too many promises, things are going backwards!) All rights reserved There will be no lorries with sound systems this year, but everyone is free to bring along a banner featuring their slogan of choice. Gay Pride has had to adapt in order to be held in 2021, but the organisers (the Inter-LGBT) are still expecting a huge crowd ready to shout and have fun after months of reduced movement and curfews! There’s still plenty to look forward to though… All rights reserved The Marche des Fiertés LGBTQIA+ – or more simply, Gay Pride – is a little different this year, with a parade starting in the suburbs (don’t worry, there’s a metro station), no sound systems and no giant stage show at the end. The flag has historically represented LGBTQ people as a whole, and critics of Philly’s changes to it believe those changes are unnecessary, since the flag is already a symbol of unity. Philadelphia’s initiative to be more inclusionary toward nonwhite LGBTQ people comes from a good place, but its reception has been marked by controversy. To fuel this important conversation, we’ve expanded the colors of the flag to include black and brown.” Especially when it comes to recognizing people of color in the LGBTQ+ community. A lot of good, but there’s more we can do. “In 1978, artist Gilbert Baker designed the original rainbow flag,” the campaign states. The colors, according to the Philadelphia Office of LGBT Affairs’ More Color More Pride campaign, represent inclusion of people of color in the LGBTQ community. The city of Philadelphia recently learned that the rainbow flag, a symbol of LGBTQ pride, isn’t quite as unifying as it may seem.įor Pride Month, Philly added two colors - black and brown - to the existing pride flag, and hoisted it outside City Hall. They risked their jobs, their housing, their family relationships, really everything, to stand up to the fear and hatred that predominated in their lives.īut for that one day, their worlds transformed. For the participants, it was a radical act to announce to an unaccepting world that they were gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer. The first events had no corporate sponsorship and no police protection. Those first parades were much smaller than the one we enjoy in San Francisco every year. Patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn march after a police raid in 1969. That uprising was in response to yet another raid by NYC police who persecuted the patrons for having the audacity to create a safe space to gather with other LGBTQ people. The date was the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riot on June 28, 1969. In fact, the first Pride parades were held just over 50 years ago in 1970. But the month-long celebration only began in 1999, by a proclamation from then-president Bill Clinton. For over 20 years, Pride has been widely celebrated in the Bay Area during June each year.
